Movie producers and directors work with a group of talented actors and other crew members to produce high-quality entertainment that tells stories that appeal to audiences. In the early days of movie production, the concept of the story was not as important as the ability to tell good stories. Movie producers and screenwriters relied more on the power of the story to sell tickets and create audience loyalty. As the years have progressed, the importance of story has increased because it is the driving force behind the successful production of movies. Successful movie producers and directors rely on expert writing, directing, casting, and animation to tell compelling stories that sell.

An outline is a document that is written to provide direction to a movie producer or director. While outlines are most effective if they are written in collaboration with the producer or director, some movie producers and directors will use outlines to write a treatment or screenplay. The treatment or screenplay is the blueprint for the movie. Movie producers and directors should note the major themes and story elements that will be featured in their movie.

A producer may need to change themes when the story demands such a change. One of the most common themes changes is when a character’s age is changed from the original or preferred age in the original novel or television show to a younger or more modern era. If the change results in diminished appeal, the producer may choose to settle the film or find a new age for the character. However, changing themes is usually not done unless it results in a dramatic turn of events.

A character’s behavior is another way to alter the basic themes of the story. Suzie Maltese is a tough, smart and persistent thirteen-year-old who is also a tomboy. She displays these traits throughout the movie as she attempts to get her hands on the latest video game system and attempts to navigate through her own emotions while competing with her friends. When Suzy mails Jack, the father of one of her classmates, a letter describing her behavior, which includes her mentioning her desire to join a rock band, Jack assumes that she is trying to make progress toward a more feminine, independent lifestyle.

The “My Sweet Suzie” movie was a box office hit in its day and remains a favorite amongst fans of the genre. Adapted from the successful “Suzuki Kid” cartoon series of the eighties, “My Sweet Suzie” follows the cute girl’s progression through childhood as she interacts with her classmates and the adults who interact with her. Adapting the successful “anuts” theme that year, the movie presents a classic comedy with an added dose of romance.
